The Mansfield Alumni Mustangs, A Special Olympics Texas Team was started in June of 2004 when our son graduated from Mansfield High School. The current Special Olympics program that we were in was unable to support athletes once they graduated from high school. We decided to begin a program to support the needs of those who have graduated from the Mansfield Independent School District.
You must have graduated from the Mansfield Independent School District to be eligible to become an athlete for the Mansfield Alumni Mustangs, A Special Olympics Texas Team. The potential athlete must meet Special Olympics Texas requirements to participate in the program. Unified Sports® Partners are not required to have graduated from the Mansfield Independent School District to be on the team
We have Unified Sports® teams in all sports if the number of athletes and partners are available to make a team. The Unified Sports® program integrates athletes with and without intellectual disabilities in training and competition. It helps to build friendships and understanding between athletes with and without intellectual disabilities. It also allows Special Olympics families to participate as team members and cocahes on a Unified Sports® team.
We currently offer the following sports:
- Summer Chapter Games - Basketball & Cycling
- Fall Classic - Aquatics & Bocce
- Winter Chapter Games - Bowling & Powerlifting
Parents of the athletes are required to help keep the program going with group fundraising, assist as volunteers, assistant coaches and coaches. The program can not survive without the support of the parents and we expect them to help where needed.
If you are interested in assisting the current program or would like to help us expand into other sports as a coach, assistant coach or volunteer, then please contact our Head of Delegation (Les Fenton). He can be reached by using the form in the Contact Us section.
